Cell Phone

I am just wondering if anyone has any advice on the cheapest way to get a cell phone in Mexico and Central America. If possible I'd like to buy one in Mexico, and then switch sim cards in each coun try I drive through. Is this possible? Or will I need a new phone in each country?

Movistar might work

Hi Nathalie,

We bought a pre-paid Movistar phone in Mexico with a great plan that allowed calls to the US/Canada (30 min for $1 however if it was 5 min or 25 min it was still $1). Anyway it worked really well for us and we used the phone again in Argentina as Movistar is a found throughout Latin America. I cannot say for sure that you will be able to use the phone in each country and we only used it in places we were for a few months but I think you should be able to buy a sim card in each country no problem. One thing to think about is making sure the phone is unlocked. You can have this done just about anywhere ;)

I assume you want the phone as you drive but skype is also a great option and wifi is very easy to find in Latin America.

Good luck!

We have an unlocked iPhone

We have an unlocked iPhone and we have bought pay as you go simcards in several countries. The iphone comes in very handy, because you can also use it at wifi hotspots for Skype, as a web browser and as a camera.

The simcards are relatively inexpensive in most countries. You can also purchase pay as you go phones in most countries for a very reasonable cost; however, they are basically disposable. Try to find a quadband unlocked phone on Amazon and you will be able to use it in any country in the world. The nice thing about having a basic quad band phone is that no one will really want to steal it, an iPhone draws attention...

For example: In Mexico you can get a pretty decent unlimited Internet data (small print says 2 gig ) for a month for about $40 US a month. We had coverage in just about every corner of the country.

Good luck!

Thank you for the advice! But

Thank you for the advice! But just to clarify, you recommend buying an unlocked phone in advance, not in Mexico? Is it possible to get one easily in Mexico? We are leaving this Sunday from BC Canada, so I need to figure this out asap:)

Thanks again!

You can get the phone in

You can get the phone in Mexico as well. Just make sure it is unlocked so that you can use it in every country, otherwise you will have to buy a new phone in every country you visit.

If I may ask what will you be using the phone for? Local calls or calls back home?

Hi - I'm Kelsey's husband, we

Hi - I'm Kelsey's husband, we didn't have to unlock the moviestar phone we bought and used on our drive. We purchased a moviestar sim card for the same phone in Argentina and it worked without us having to deal with any unlocking issues... I think this would be the case for each country. Moviestar and Contigo had the most widspread networks when I was looking into it.
