Do I have to pay customs at every border?

Hi there,

Can anyone advise on the "customs" aspect while moving some goods between US and central america? I am not just roadtripping but actually moving my van loaded with household goods, destination is costa rica and was wondering if I would be required to pay customs at every border or just destination or nowhere at all? Anyone experienced this?

Thanks in advance!

Customs "charges"

Your "customs" charges at the borders can differ, according to the agents atitude on the day you cross.  This is one reason you need to know your way.  Also you need to get some special papers in the US before you cross at the Los Indios crossing, this with the knowledge of the procedures will save you loads of cash!!!

CUSTOMS PAPERS - YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BRING THIS VEHICLE AS A

CLE...AS A TOURIST.  YOU MUST GET A SPECIAL PERMIT, AND THAT IS ONLY ISSUED AT THE LOS INDIOS CROSSING. THERE IS A 3 DAY WAITING PERIOD ON THE TEXAS SIDE TO OBTAIN THE PERMISSION.  YOU MUST HAVE THE ORGINAL TITLE IN YOUR NAME, THERE WILL BE A NCIC CHECK DONE ON THE VEHICLE.  YOU ALSO MUST HAVE A CIVILIAN CUSTOMS AGENT (I AM NOT ABLE TO TELL YOU WHO ON THIS POST) DO THE PAPERWORK IN THIS REGION.

AFTER THE WAIT PERIOD, YOUR TITLE IS PRESENTED FIRST TO US CUSTOMS, THEY WILL PERFORATE IT ON A MACHINE THAT INDICATES IT HAS LEFT THE COUNTRY.  THEN, WITH THE PREPARED PAPERS, YOU WILL CROSS INTO MEXICO, WHERE THEY WILL INVENTORY YOUR ITEMS, AND GIVE YOU THE PERMISSIONS.  THE CHARGES WILL DEPEND ON WHAT YOU HAVE (IF YOU LET ME KNOW, MAYBE I CAN GIVE YOU AN ESTIMATED COST?).

AFTER THAT YOU WILL HAVE 72 HOURS TO CROSS MEXICO TO THE GUATEMALA BORDER, THERE THE MEXICAN CUSTOMS WILL CLEAR YOU AND YOU CAN ENTER GUATEMALA.  THE BORDER CHARGES WILL DEPEND ON HOW YOU PRESENT YOURSELFS TO THE VARIOUS CUSTOMS, PRIOR TO ARRIVING IN C.R.  GUATEMALA, EL SALVADOR, HOUNDURAS, AND NICARAGUA.  ALSO YOU WILL NEED TO PURCHASE INSURANCE, WHICH IS NOT TOO EXPENSIVE.

THE ABOVE INFO, IS BECAUSE OF YOUR VEHICLE TYPE AND THE CARGE YOU HAVE.  IF YOU HAD A "NORMAL" TOURIST RV OR AUTO THIS DOES NOT APPLY.

I HOPE I HAVE ENLIGHTED YOU A BIT, IF YOU NEED ANY MORE INFO LET ME KNOW
