Casey and Kim

We are quiting our jobs in the California Bay Area July 2017 and taking a year off to travel.  We are planning on taking 9 months to drive through Central and South America, making it as far south as our time off permits.

Hometown:
San Francisco
When did you start your travels?:
09/10/2017
Reason for taking this trip:
After working for about 5 years in the Bay Area, we decided the 8 to 5 lifestyle was overrated.
Why did you decide to drive?:
We've been planning to take year off for several years now. After spending two weeks driving through Vietnam on scooters in Spring 2016, we kinda fell in love with traveling with our own vehicles and making the road just one more part of the journey...and the documentary 180° South about Jeff Johnson's journey to recreate Yvon Chouinard and Douglas Tompkins' trip from California to Patagonia.
Are you also taking along pets?:
No
Are you also taking along children?:
No
What type of car are you driving?:
1998 4Runner (Name: Jaime)
Did you make any modifications to your car for this trip?:
We will be adding: -Raised sleeping platform with storage -Security/Kill switch system -Dual battery system -Lock box -12v fridge (if we can justify the cost) -Roof rack
How did you save up or finance your trip?:
We have been putting saving money for the last 3 or 4 years with the idea of taking a year off.
How long do you plan on traveling?:
9 months of driving
Where do you plan on driving? :
Mostly following the Pan American highway. We plan on bouncing around between coasts in Central America and then sticking mostly to the west in South America. We'll probably spend a good chunk of time in Colombia.
What were your family’s and friends’ reactions when you told them about your trip before you left?:
Everyone is pretty stoked for us. (We may have a few stowaways on our way out.) Our families
What languages do you speak? Will you learn more on your trip?:
Casey is supposed to be learning Spanish...he'll blame is lack of effort on trip and vehicle build out. Kim was once conversational in Spanish... Hopefully by end of the trip we'll be able to hold our own in Spanish...no promises
Do you have a favorite place that you've visited?:
We'll keep you posted.
What was the weirdest thing you experienced on your trip?:
We'll keep you posted.
What was the worst border crossing?:
We'll keep you posted.
