Chilean Car, 6 months "visa". Is this extendable?

Greetings!
We´ve bought a beautiful kombi to enjoy South America in. We drove from Santiago to Buenas Aires and at the border we got a 6 months "visa" for the car. We want to travel up through Brazil before returning to Chile to sell the car. And without the stress of our cars visa to run out and having to rush back or face tough problems returning at the border over due date.

Have you guys got any experience with this? Can we extend the visa in any ways?

Cheers,

Amalie&Jonatan

Nope,  Chilean plated

Nope,  Chilean plated vehicles, only could stay out of the country up to 90-180 days out of the country. Unless the car won't never return to Chile.

I've seen posts saying that

I've seen posts saying that there is a small fine on return to Chile and the missing tax has to be paid, but that it isn't a major amount and not a big hassle to sort out.. The problem would be if you wanted to sell the car out of the country which might prove to be impossible for the new owner to sort out on return

Can't remember where I read it - probably the panamerican facebook page or maybe HUBB

Does anyone have more information for this topic?

We are experiencing the same problem, has anyone been through this process and have any more information?
Thanks in advance.

Which particular problem.

Which particular problem. Leaving for more than 6 months and returning, or trying to sell the car in another country?

Leaving chile for more than 6 months

We bought the car in Chile but our plans are to be out of the country for approximately 8 months. Im just a bit unsure what will happen when we return to Chile after overstaying the temporary export permit.

We have until December to return to Chile but we plan to be in Colombia for January. We could possibly quickly go back to Chile now as we are in La Paz, just not sure if there is anything we can do to extend it.

Thanks,

Hayley

Solution

We have experienced this problem and found a solution.

What you need to do to extend the time your chilean car is allowed out of chile for up to one year.

You need to email the aduana at the border where you left the country.

We left through Antafogasta and contatcted them through this email - [email protected]

Email the aduana in the region you left in asking to extend your car permit.

You also need to write a semi formal letter stating the reasons why you would like to extend and that you want to receive the extension by email.

This is the letter we sent and were able to get the extension.

Yo, (Name and RUT)  am solicitando una extensión de las veces mi chileno coche se permite estar fuera de Chile.
Coche de información:
year,make,model
Placa:

Extension longer than 1 year

Hi there,

I am looking into buying a car from other travellers who are in Colombia with an Chilean plated car. I would buy the car, get a poder, and drive back to Chile and sell it there. They have already extended their stay from 180 days to 360 days.

I might not make it back within those 360 days. Does anybody know if the Aduana will accept any extension longer then 360 days? Let's say if I would ask for 90-180 days more.

Anybody any experience or info! Much appreciated
