Driving through Mexico safety?

Wondering if there is any recent intel on driving in or through Mexico?

I am/was planning to drive to Panama next month but some of our friends are saying it is too dangerous, the police will even alert the gangs when you go through checkpoints.

Should I forget it?
Thx

Hi Dave,

I know when I left for my trip in fall of 2008, we were warned by all kinds of people about how dangerous it is to cross the border, so we decided to leave early in the morning to avoid being next to the border in the late afternoon and evening.

However, I also know that things have escalated since then.

According to the US State Department, "Millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year. This includes tens of thousands who cross the border every day for study, tourism or business and at least one million U.S. citizens who live in Mexico."

You may want to check out the latest info at:

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_4755.html

I also found this:
"Up-to-date information on safety and security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and Canada or, for callers outside the United States and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays)"
