Going through Mexico in an RV

Hello everybody,

my girlfriend and I are planning to go from Canada to Nicaragua in an RV. She is Canadian, I am German and currently living in Nicaragua.

So, I have been reading about crossing Mexico, which requires a temporary import permit.

On this site http://wikioverland.org/Mexico it says:

1) You may NOT request a permit for a vehicle weighing more than 3.5 metric tons (7,716 lbs).

2) Only the registered owner of the vehicle or spouse are allowed to drive the vehicle. If somebody else gets caught driving the vehicle, consider it donated to customs.

Do any of you know if this is accurate?

Regarding 1): How do people cross with RVs bigger than that?

Regarding 2): The RV is going to be registered in my GFs name in Canada. Does that mean I cannot drive it at all in Mexico?

Thanks for your help!
