Mapping your Pan American highway

Hey roadtrippers -

How do you/have you mapped your route along the Pan American highway? My friend and I are leaving Los Angeles and going all the way to Rio, Brazil this coming May. We will have 9-10 weeks to do it.

We need guidance on how you and others have mapped and planned your route.

general advice for not getting lost

  • Ask for directions based on the city you're heading towards, not the name of the road you're looking for
  • When driving through a town, follow trucks - they are often just trying to get through the town as well, and probably know the quickest way through
  • Ask the locals, but don't rely on any one person for directions; people often seem reluctant to admit they don't know
  • Use a compass - we did more than once
  • In many parts of Central America, if you're on a somewhat major road (paved, a fair amount of cars, in reasonable condition) you're on the Pan-American; there just aren't too many choices otherwise.
