Road Maps for South America

I’m looking for advice on detailed paper road maps for most South American countries, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Brazil.  My pickup truck is currently in Costa Rica and with luck, a whole lot of it, I’ll take the role on role off ferry between Cartagena and Colon in a few months.  For Central America we mostly used National Geographic maps though for South America there maps are not as complete.  My wife and I will be doing a lot of camping and exploring so maps with park boundaries and the like are a plus.

So far the best map I’ve found for much of South America is the Argentina/Bolivia/Brazil/Chile/Paraguay/Uruguay Super Atlas by Zagier & Urruty Pubns. though I never have been able to figure out the scale of that map.  The few people selling it online that have it in stock don’t seem interested in answering my emails.

Any tips from folks that have driven these areas would be very much appreciated.

We also have a hiking gps that and have uploaded open source street maps.  These maps can be hit or miss but when they are good they are very good.  That said there is nothing like a paper map!

Thank you,

Reise Know-How- The best!

Check out these German made paper maps:

They have some suppliers around the world, but I recommend emailing them directly. They can mail you the latest updated version (updates happen at least every year!). They are amazing maps. Far better than itmb.

For free GPS maps, check out for Colombia, and fo peru. For Argentina and Chile check out sells maps of South America for a $50 subscription. All of these are hit or miss.

Thanks for great map advice

Thank you everyone that chimed in.  After calling around on the recommendations I’m going to swing into a Reise Know How’s US distributer in North Carolina.  I’ve been impressed by the maps they have in stock and the knowledge (some fine fellow named Rod) of various in country produced maps.

Thank you again,
