sell chilean plated car in the US

Hi, does anyone know whether it is possible to sell a Chilean plated car in the US? I believe there would be two possibilities;

  • sell it for somebody to use in the US
  • sell it to someone who will be driving it back to chile, and sell it there more easily.

I believe the first can be quite dificult, anybody knows of someone experienced or would be interested in the second?

thanks, Reinout

Info would need checking but

Info would need checking but generally importing a vehicle into the US - which is what your first proposal is suggesting - isn't easy to do as there are various regulations that must be satisfied.  if the new owner was just going to drive it around without local paperwork, they would be doing so illegally as they did not seek permission for temporary importation and would have problems getting insurance.

As for the second choice - I believe that assuming you are the legal owner according to Chilean records, once you have been gone for more than 6 months, you are illegally out of the country. Then, if the vehicle is brought back into Chile there may be problems for you, the legal owner, but certainly for the new owner because a sale outside Chile is illehgal. A legal sale within Chile apparently requires the presence of both new and current owner.

If you bought the car outside of Chile then I guess it is a bit shonky anyway and may depend on the risk tolerance and skill with photoshop of the prospective buyer. Illegal of course and stupid, but that hasn't stopped a lot of others doing likewise. Trouble is they would have to stay out of Chile and that would put a big crimp in their travel plans.
