Travelling SF to Panama by rented car?

I want to travel from San Francisco to Panama by car. Can I travel by rented car (one way) or is this just impossible and do I need to buy one? Ans is this safe for a woman solo traveler?

Hi Zazou,

I do not believe you will be able to leave the U.S. with most rental cars. You will have to check to see if they allow you to enter other countries, since you need to have your name on the car's Certificate of Title or have an affidavit from the rental agency stating that you can enter the country with the vehicle. Also, many rental agencies allow a maximum rental time of 30 days.

For this reason many people opt to buy an inexpensive car in California to do the drive.

As for safety, it will always be safer to travel with a companion whether you are male or female. However, thousands of women with or without the company of men travel to Central America. I personally ran into a woman from Germany that was backpacking through Mexico alone and said she felt perfectly safe during her trip. Volunteer Latin America Blog has some good info on solo woman travelers, and so does Both articles say that is perfectly safe to go as long as you follow some basic safety tips, such as not traveling at night and staying away from large "non touristy" cities.

I hope this info helps,

No you can’t have it, I have

No you can’t have it, I have asked the cebu car rental for I would also want to travel with a rental car but they did not allow me and it’s also impossible for that. I should advise you to buy your own for your service.
